Description

This volume of the series “Fauna Ibérica” is devoted to butterflies (Lepidoptera) of the family Zygaenidae. This family boasts a curious and exclusive feature in the animal kingdom: its capacity to synthesize and metabolize hydrogen cyanide. This highly toxic substance constitutes an excellent defense system against a large number of predators. In the Iberian Peninsula, we find 3 of the 5 subfamilies that make up the family: the Procridinae (3 genera and 14 species), Chalcosiinae (1 relict genus and 1 species) and Zygaenidae (1 genus and 14 species).
In this work, we discuss the systematic position and geographical distribution of these three subfamilies, along with their phylogeny, fossil record, origin and dispersion, current geographical distribution, defense mechanisms, natural enemies and the morphology of their imagos and immature stages. We provide easy dichotomic keys to all taxonomic levels and the main differential characters of current species, along with up-to-date maps of their distribution in the Peninsula. The volume is illustrated with micrographs of the genitalia (both male and female) and colour plates of all the species of our fauna. This information is completed by an extensive current bibliography and five appendices. The first of these appendices presents a nomenclatural revision of the Iberian species; the second and third appendices are keys, in English and Spanish, respectively, for identifying species without a need for previous knowledge of the genus and subgenus; the fourth appendix is a list of their nutrient plants indicating the species feeding on each plant; and the fifth appendix provides the etymology of the names for the Ibero-Balearic species.
